Black Excellence Short Story Competition

Heron Hall students in years 7 and 8 have participated in a story competition involving past and present inspirational Black figures.

In this competition, students were shown examples of innovative and influential Black figures who share the values that Heron Hall represents. That being Support, Tolerance, Resilience, Integrity, Visionary, and Excellence (STRIVE). Students were then invited to write a short story on these inspiring figures.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a British cellist and is one of the figures the students wrote about. He is the first black musician to win the 2016 BBC Young Musician award since its launch in 1978.

Students also wrote about historical figures like Warrior Queen Amina of the city-state Zazzau, in what is now in the north-west region of Nigeria. She ruled in the mid-sixteenth century.

We look forward to announcing the competition winners shortly and publishing the stories.
